In fall 2005, when rebuilding Sun Valley Adaptive Sports, Tom had a vision to develop a novel program that would combine innovative and efficacious types of sports, family, and coping therapies to heal and restore the lives of wounded veterans and their spouses. The result was Higher Ground, the signature program of SVAS. In five years, Higher Ground has evolved into what many at the Department of Defense, VA Centers, and military medical hospitals around the country consider the gold standard program for therapeutic rehabilitation camps for wounded veterans.
Higher Ground was one of the first resort-based
sports organizations to host therapeutic
snowsports camps with military installations
like Brooke Army Medical Hospital. It was
also one of the first rehabilitation programs
that identified the need to reach out to
Veterans Administration hospitals and trauma
centers to bring veterans to therapeutic
sports camps after they transitioned back
to their home communities. Higher Ground
held the nation’s first snowsports camp for blind wounded veterans, and the first fly fishingcamp for veterans with traumatic brain injuries.
Higher Ground continues to pave the way
to provide therapeutic rehabilitation for injured veterans. In March
2009, we hosted one of the industry’s first therapeutic camps for female wounded veterans, recognizing a lack of existing services available for the women who have so bravely served our country. The program took a lead role in including spouses and significant others as part of the therapeutic camps—and paying 100% of the cost for the wounded veterans and spouse to attend camps. And Higher Ground boasts the longest and most thorough follow up program for therapeutic sport camps in the nation—three years!
Tom continues to break ground for wounded veterans and their rehabilitation. His latest work and vision include hosting a best practices summit, advocating legislation, and building a multi-million rehabilitation center for wounded veterans in Sun Valley. Tom also provides consulting services to help start and mentor rehabilitation organizations for wounded veterans.

Working with the Defense Department's Military Severely Injured Center to develop a model that will allow other non-government organizations to work with the Center to provide sports and recreational rehabilitation services directly to Service Members. This model will be the first of its kind. It is significant because it will eliminate the hassle that service members face in finding sports-related rehabilitation services. (Currently, there are more than 30,000 men and women who have been severely injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.) It will also benefit medical DOD case managers who help wounded service members find sports-related rehabilitation organizations.
